The Great Irish Bloggers Bake Off Challenge

September 15, 2012 in Events

The following is a guest post from Caitriona at Wholesome Ireland. Why not join in the bloggers’ baking fun?

If you’re looking for an example of how Irish bloggers and foodies connect with each other on Twitter or check out others’ baking skills, or if you fancy trying your hand at the competition and possibly winning a gift hamper, then the Great Irish Bloggers Bake Off Challenge is for you.

It all started while watching the first episode of the Great British Bake Off on BBC2 just over a month ago. Tweeting while watching a cookery programme is something that has become a habit. I’m not too sure how much of the programme I actually see because the banter can be very fast on Twitter.  A number of us started a discussion over whether it would be a good idea to loosely follow the challenges over the course of the series and on the spot I drafted up a quick blog post and invited fellow foodies and bloggers (it’s not limited to just those who use Twitter) to join in.

Thus started the Great Irish Bloggers Bake Off Challenge, which has become a blog series on Wholesome Ireland.

It’s as much of a technical challenge for me as it is a bake-off challenge for the participants. With three volunteer judges, often as many as 15 people participating, many more watching and an active hashtag (#GIrishBO), I am kept busy from 6pm on Tuesday evenings (the weekly deadline) until the results and new challenge go up on the site. The hashtag is not only used to collate the entries – everybody uses it to ask for advice and help as they progress through the weekly challenge.

Once 6pm on Tuesday passes, I gather together all the entries – some are emailed, some blogged, some tweeted – and save them into a private Picasa folder. The judges receive a private link to the folder, review the photographs and leave me a message either on the folder or by direct message on Twitter to let me know who they think is the worthy winner.

Once the winner is chosen I put up the new post, make a collage out of all the entries and credit each blogger who entered along with each Twitter user. Dr Oetker Baking Ireland came on board and they are sponsoring a gift hamper as a prize for the winner each week.

The Great Irish Bloggers Bake Off Challenge will run for the duration of the Great British Bake Off and this week’s challenge is to bake a (key) lime pie. You can dip in and out of the challenge series. The entries are reviewed as new on a weekly basis so if you decide to enter this week, then go straight ahead.

For details of the tasks, the winners to date and to check out the weekly prize on offer, check out the dedicated category on Wholesome Ireland’s blog.

To follow the challenge on Twitter, then search for the hashtag – #GIrishBO.
