The mood was more mellow than Masterchef last night at Cooks Academy for the Plate to Page cook-off with our four finalists – David, Mona, Catherine and Joanna. With some jazz playing in the background, the finalists had 90 minutes to prepare their Irish beef dishes. Everyone got down to the business of cooking and soon we were being tempted with sizzling sounds and good smells wafting around the room.
The four judges were Maeve from Bord Bia, Vanessa from Cook’s Academy and Caroline and Kristin from the IFBA. There was a fantastic range of recipes and cuts of beef, including two recipes using fillet, one using beef cheeks and one using a rib of beef on the bone:
Kitchen 72: Beef Cheek with Guinness and Soy Glaze, Wilted Mibuna, Caulifower Purée and Pickled Vegetables
Smörgåsblog: Surf agus Turf
The Runcible Spoon: Beef, and the beer that loves it
Wise Words: Ribeye to die for
All the dishes were excellent and cooked to a high standard. It was very hard to choose, but after a half an hour of tasting and deliberations, we announced the winners. We are delighted to say that David from Kitchen 72 and Mona from Wise Words will be heading to Germany for the the From Plate to Page residential food bloggers’ photography and writing workshop from Friday, 20 to Monday, 23 May, courtesy of Bord Bia. But the runners-up, Catherine and Joanna, didn’t go home empty handed – they each won a place on a workshop at Cooks Academy and all four finalists also received a copy of the Cook’s Academy Cookbook.
Well done to all the finalists and congratulations to David and Mona, and thank you again to Bord Bia and Cook’s Academy as well. We look forward to reading the blog posts all about everyone’s experiences in May!
